If your joints have been aching for a while and you are not sure why, you are not alone. Joint pain is one of the most common reasons people visit their doctor, and it tends to become more noticeable as we get older. But that does not mean you have to live with it without understanding what is happening.
What causes joint pain?
The most common cause is osteoarthritis. This happens when the cartilage that cushions your joints gradually wears down over time. It is not a disease you catch. It is something that develops slowly, often over many years. The joints most affected are the knees, hips, hands and spine.
Rheumatoid arthritis is different. It is an autoimmune condition where the body's immune system attacks the lining of the joints. It tends to cause swelling, warmth and stiffness, often in both hands or both knees at the same time.
How do you know which one you have?
Osteoarthritis pain usually gets worse with activity and better with rest. It often feels worse at the end of the day. Morning stiffness tends to pass within 30 minutes.
Rheumatoid arthritis stiffness tends to last longer in the morning, often more than an hour. You may also feel generally tired or unwell.
Only a doctor can tell you for certain. If your joint pain has lasted more than a few weeks, it is worth getting it checked.
What helps?
Movement is one of the best things you can do. It sounds counterintuitive when your joints hurt, but gentle, regular movement keeps them lubricated and the surrounding muscles strong. Swimming, walking, and cycling are all good options.
Heat therapy can help with stiffness. A warm pad or hot water bottle applied to a stiff joint before movement can make a real difference. Cold therapy, such as an ice pack wrapped in a cloth, can help with swelling and acute pain after activity.
Joint supports and braces can take some of the pressure off a painful knee or wrist during daily tasks. They are not a cure, but they can make everyday life more comfortable while you work on longer-term solutions.
If you are managing joint pain day to day, the right tools at home can make a significant difference to your quality of life.
